Sundial Exchange - for Guardian and related canons

Thanks to everyone who's contributed to the collection! We had an amazing year this Exchange, with every single participant receiving a treat. We planned to close on the 12th, but as treats are still being created we'll be keeping the collection open until until March 31st, at which time it will be closed. So if you have any last-last-minute treats, you have a few more days to post them!

There are only a few more hours until the Sundial Exchange goes live! At the time I'm writing this post, we have 152 works in the collection, which is well over double last year's total! (If you're having a hard time waiting, there's still time to add a few more treats...)

The collection will go live on Friday 12th February at around 11 AM GMT. There will be an announcement both on dreamwidth and on twitter to let you know when it's happened.

This year we need to give special shout-outs to our pinch-hitters wrote_and_writ, laireshi and trickytricky, as well as naye, tinypinkmouse and rlyqueer who have each made a frankly amazing number of treats for other participants! And a big thank-you also to everyone who's been working hard to follow our accessibility guidelines to make this exchange as welcoming as possible for the widest number of fans. We also know that AO3 isn't the easiest place to post non-fanfic works to, and really appreciate the efforts of our creators across many different mediums.

Creators, we recommend that after the collection opens you go into the editing pane for your work and set the posting date to the 12th February. This makes your work more visible to people looking at the chronological AO3 fandom page.

When you open your gift, please remember to leave a comment. Your creator worked hard to make something just for you and will be very happy to know that you appreciate their efforts. We also encourage everyone to leave kudos and comments to fellow participants and spread the love.

As a note, if your specific gift differs from what you were hoping to receive, please resist expressing disappointment to your creator or where it could potentially get back to them. The simplest "thank you for making this" can go a long way, and there is such a huge range of fanworks to explore in the collection that there will certainly be something lovely for everyone to enjoy.

(If you have a serious issue with your gift - that is, if it contains one of your DNWs, is personally offensive, or is in a format that you asked not to receive, please contact the mods privately and we will help you.)

Hello everyone! The deadline to post your Sundial Exchange creation to the collection on AO3 is by the end of February 5th (as long as it's still Feb 5th somewhere in the world when you post, you're good! You can consider this 10am UTC on the 6th if that's helpful for you). On Saturday morning, the mods will be going through the collection and making sure that each participant has a complete gift from their assigned creator, which must conform to all of the guidelines below. If your participant does not, we will begin searching for a pinch hitter for them.

You will then have time until the end of February 11th to make treats (a treat FAQ will be posted this weekend) and for any pinch hitters to do their creating. We will open the collection and reveal works on the morning of February 12th, which is Lunar New Year. And we'll keep the collection open for late submission of treats for a full month after that!

Please read this post carefully, as it contains the posting guidelines we need you to follow.

First off: Please only post complete works to the collection! It can be very tempting, since the actual reveal date isn't until the 12th, to post half a fanwork with the intention of finishing it before the deadline. Please don't do this. Whatever you post should be a completed creation such that, even if you lost all access to the internet the week after posting it, it could still be considered a complete gift by the parameters of the exchange. If you want to post a completed black and white drawing with the intent of swapping it out with a color version before the deadline? That's fine! If you want to post your completed story with the intention of coming back and fixing typos before the deadline - or even a standalone story that you intend to be the first part of a series you will continue later? Also fine!

However, posting 3/5 chapters of a story or a half-finished drawing (or podfic, or other kind of creation) with the intention of finishing it before the 12th? Not fine.

A final note:
We encourage you to take joy in what you’ve created as it is. Stating what it *isn’t* is not helpful, ie: "I wanted this to be better" or "I was going to make something different" in the notes or comments. The fact that you've created something for someone is special and wonderful. You are awesome! It doesn't need to be perfect. Let your recipient decide how they feel about the creation on their own, no matter how many flaws you think you see in it.

NB: We are committed to being an accessible exchange. Vids and gifs must include content notes for flashy effects; here is some info on how to make light transitions more photosensitive-friendly in gifs and vids. All text must be able to be read by a screen reader. Alt-text must be provided for texts in PDF and for images, and loud spikes in noise must be denoted for audio. Hi folks! Just a quick reminder, sign ups for the Sundial Exchange will close on December 6th. Starting sometime on December 7th, we'll start working on matching people.

If you've been hesitating about signing up, remember, this is a low-pressure exchange designed to be fun! If you want to offer fic and only fic, that's totally fine (and the minimum is a measly 500 words!) But you can also offer a wide variety of other types of fanworks, including art, playlists, manips, icons, recipes, moodboards, vids, interactive fiction, carved stamps, and anything else you can dream up!

We encourage you to post a "Dear Creator" letter and include a link to it in your sign up. Please try to have your letter posted by the sign up deadline so that it will be definitely there when your secret creator receives your name.

Once the sign-up period has finished, we'll be putting up a post where you can share the details you put in your sign-up form and link to your "Dear Creator" letter. You'll then be able to browse for inspiration to make treats for anyone in the exchange.
